Providenciales Wakeboarding

Turks and Caicos is an exceptional destination for wakeboarding and several other wake sports. Here, you’ll find crystal-clear turquoise water, sheltered flats, amazing backdrops, and even the occasional dolphin riding the surf. The wake sports that the local tour companies offer include wakeboarding, wakesurfing, water skiing, subwinging, and tubing.

If you don't have much experience with board sports (such as snowboarding or kiteboarding) and just want to have fun on the water without investing time to learn, you may want to consider tubing, as no experience or skill is required.

Due to the expertise required to captain a vessel in the challenging waters of the Turks and Caicos and the associated safety risks, all wake excursions are guided. Boat or independent equipment rentals are not offered.

Weather and Locations

As is the case with many other popular water sports (such as snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding), calm, windless, and glassy conditions typically provide the best experience on the water.

The Turks and Caicos generally experiences an east-southeast trade wind, which allows for flat spots on the leeward (western) sides of its cays and islands.

The best locations close to Providenciales are usually off the east side of the island in the Princess Alexandra National Park at Donna Cay and Little Water Cay, or off the north of Half Moon Bay and Water Cay. You would be hard-pressed to find spots in other Caribbean regions that match the natural beauty of these locations.

The southwest coast of Providenciales near Sapodilla Bay and Taylor Bay can also have decent conditions at times. So can the popular Grace Bay Beach.

Wakesurfing

Wakesurfing is becoming an increasingly popular sport in the Turks and Caicos, and has arguably overtaken wakeboarding and water skiing. This sport is done behind specialized wake boats that create a clean surfing wave.

Wakesurfing is more similar to traditional surfing than it is to wakeboarding. Boards for this sport don't have straps, and once a rider is comfortable on the wave, use of the tow rope is optional. In theory, wakesurfing essentially allows you to ride an endless wave, as the wave is generated by the boat.

While it takes some practice to learn how to get up on the board, wakesurfing has a fairly shallow learning curve. Many riders are able to stand up on the board within 1–2 sessions. Wakesurfing charters typically have an instructor stationed at the back of the boat, who provides feedback during and after each attempt.

Water Skiing

While less popular now than it was in the past, water skiing is a sport that several Turks and Caicos wakeboarding companies still offer. Like wakeboarding (and many other water sports), water skiing takes a bit of practice to pick up. Businesses offer instruction, but once you get an explanation of the basics, it just takes some practice.

Learning and Instruction

Dedicated wake sport jet boats are typically preferable to other vessel types for wakeboarding and wakesurfing.

The local companies offer a complete range of beginner lessons, certified instruction and coaching for higher skill levels, and equipment appropriate for all ages.

Wakeboarding, wakesurfing, and water skiing are suitable for a wide age range, and even children as young as seven can begin, so the whole family can participate.

While it varies by person, instructors are able to get most participants on the water within an hour or two.

Booking and Reservations

Rates are typically based on time out on the water and the size of the vessel. Wakeboarding charters start at around $500 per hour, exclusive of taxes and fees (2025 price).

Wake sport boats tend to be small, so excursions are typically private charters. Dedicated Mastercraft wake sport boats are the vessels of choice, and offer better handling and wake conditions than other boats.

Wakesurfing requires a larger vessel capable of creating a bit of a wave, and consequently may demand a higher hourly rate.

Local businesses typically provide all necessary equipment and have great gear and a wide selection of boards. Tours often depart from either Grace Bay Beach in front of the resorts or at a local marina. Some companies may offer transportation from your resort.

Getting the Best Price

In most cases, it's best to book direct with the company to get the best price.

Be aware that the Turks and Caicos experiences predictable tourism seasons, and availability may be limited at times. Consider reserving your charter well in advance of your arrival date, especially if you're visiting between December and April.
