Ocean Frontiers is a boutique private charter and snorkeling eco-adventure company that specializes in visiting secluded and pristine locations. The charter is led by Captain Ernesto and First Mate Lynn, and they’re typically found in the far reaches of the Caicos Islands, at pristine places such as West Caicos, Northwest Point, West Reefs, Southwest Reef, Molasses Reef, and French Cay.
Ocean Frontiers operates the MV Bonita, a fast and sleek 37-foot Axopar SunTop boat. She is the perfect platform for adventures, as she combines a fast cruising speed and a stable ride that allows transits to most locations in around 40 minutes. There is very comfortable seating for seven guests under the shade and on the ever-popular sun lounger up on the bow.
MV Bonita is equipped with a built-in cooler, a mini fridge, a stocked cupboard with cups, plates, cutlery, and napkins, a dry cabin, and a restroom.
Ocean Frontiers is a family-friendly adventure charter, and everyone from toddlers to grandparents are welcome. However, because trips go further afield, at times there may be choppy seas on parts of the journey to and from destinations. Please keep this in mind when considering going out with us.
Bespoke Charters
Tours with Ocean Frontiers are private and custom, with the locations chosen according to the day’s weather and ocean conditions, and a goal of finding the best reefs and water clarity.
Depending on the destination, there may be cliff jumping at the spectacular blue waters of West Caicos, visits to historical sites such as Yankee Town, snorkeling at vibrant reefs and on shallow shipwrecks, and of course visits to beautiful beaches.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling is the mainstay of Ocean Frontiers, and Captain Ernesto has a wealth of knowledge of the expansive western side of the Caicos Islands, with its barrier reef, walls, and shallows. When snorkeling in nature there’s no guarantee of what may be seen, and every trip is different. Sightings typically include beautiful reefs and plenty of colorful fish, but may also include eagle rays, nurse sharks, stingrays, hawksbill turtles, green turtles, squid, eels, spiny lobsters, giant channel crabs, and barracudas. A little less common are dolphins, grey reef sharks, leatherback turtles, and humpback whales during the winter months.
Ocean Frontiers provides high-quality snorkel gear for guest use, and also welcomes guests to bring their own equipment if desired.
Historical Sites and Nature
For those that want to see some attractions on land and take a break from the water, Ocean Frontiers can visit one of a number of fascinating historical and natural features, including the Victorian-era Yankee Town settlement on West Caicos, beautiful Lake Catherine, and the rock inscriptions and small cave at West Harbour Bluff.
Another possible stop on a charter with Ocean Frontiers is French Cay, which is a small isolated cay on the southern edge of the Caicos Banks. This island attracts an array of wildlife, including a constantly–changing menagerie of birdlife, and sea creatures that at times may include numbers of nurse sharks, which breed in the shallows off the northern side of the cay.
The sheltered western coast of West Caicos offers low cliffs, amazing blue water, and excellent visibility. There are several incredible spots along this coastline, including fun cliff jumping locations and small caves.
Shipwrecks
Ocean Frontiers is a top choice for those that want to snorkel and explore a shipwreck. Everyone knows about the La Famille Express off of Long Bay Beach, yet Captain Ernesto has a trove of small and interesting shipwrecks to explore in shallow water on the outer fringes of the Caicos Islands plateau.
Due to the remote locations of many of these wrecks, they may not always be viable to visit at all times due to weather conditions, however there’s typically at least one that’s an option. The wrecks are found in breathtaking and shallow blue and turquoise waters, and there are typically schools of reef fish around the wreckage, and lobsters hiding underneath.
