Providenciales has a few small riding stables that offer horseback riding along the island's beautiful beaches. The beaches in Turks and Caicos offer an amazing tropical setting for riding: crystal-clear turquoise water and pristine white sand. Both beginners and experienced equestrians will appreciate the routes and trails.

Located on the southeast side of the island near Long Bay Beach, Provo Ponies offers both group and private rides and is the primary company offering beach horseback riding. There’s also a small stable that operates in Blue Hills and one in Five Cays.

Before rides, guides provide a quick introduction on equipment and safety as well as basic commands for directing your horse. Most offer guide-led ponies for small children.

Best Horseback Riding Locations

The sights and scenery differ depending on the tour and location. Trails are generally on level terrain with little change in elevation.

Less-developed Long Bay Beach is the most popular coast for horseback riding. Located on the shallow Caicos Banks, the ocean here is a dazzling turquoise hue (and many rides involve wading into the water on horseback). The coast is one of the top kiteboarding destinations in the Caribbean, so you’ll see some action on the water as well if the wind is blowing.

Blue Hills Beach on the north coast is typically quite calm with relatively shallow water. Several local beachfront restaurants are located nearby and are a convenient stop before or after your ride.

Five Cays Beach is a white-sand beach with extremely shallow water located in the community of Five Cays. This coast can experience quite a bit of sargassum at times, but for much of the year is a beautiful beach with little development and is close by for those staying in Chalk Sound.

Booking and Reservations

Spaces on group rides can fill up months in advance. It's recommended to reserve your ride well in advance of your visit, especially during the winter high season months of January, February, March, and April.

Cancellations within 24–48 hours before a scheduled ride may incur hefty fees. Operators are required to charge 12% government tourism tax on rides—this may be additional to advertised rates.

Policies

Weight limits of 215 pounds (97.5 kg) or less typically apply for horseback riding. Verify the stable's policy before booking.

Helmets are usually provided and are typically required for children and optional for riders 18 years or older. Some stables are able to accommodate riders with disabilities.

What to Wear

Wear long trousers and supportive closed-toe shoes. Sandals should not be worn (and many stables will not allow you to ride without proper footwear). Tours typically ride into the ocean, so shoes and pants will likely get wet.

Weddings and Special Events

If you want to reserve a private ride for a photoshoot or wedding photos with a horse, special arrangements can often be made.
