The Salt House
Church Folly, Grand TurkThe Salt House is a museum, gift shop and cafe/restaurant centered on Grand Turk’s historic salt industry. It’s a free attraction and worth a stop, both on individual tours and as part of guided cruise center tours.
The Museum and Grounds
The museum is a new building constructed in the colonial style. There’s an exhibit on Bermuda Sloops, the typical ship used in the salt industry. Interestingly, Bermuda Sloops were made of cedar, as oak would deteriorate within about twelve years due to the salty environment.
The Salt House is located right on the edge of the Town Salina, and you can walk along the salt canals to see a working replica of a windmill.
The Gift Shop
This gift shop and the National Museum shop offer the best selection of gifts and souvenirs on the island. There’s a wide range of both the typical mass-produced tourist souvenirs and more unique locally-produced wares and trinkets. It serves as an outlet for the Salt Cay Salt Works, which produces hand-made soaps and bath salts.
