A Unique Menu of Jerk, BBQ, and Chinese

Fish and chips at Chinson's Restaurant.

Chinson’s is a restaurant and bar on Leeward Highway on Providenciales that offers a menu that’s a delicious yet unique combination of Caribbean BBQ, Jamaican jerk, and Chinese cuisine. The restaurant’s open for lunch and dinner, and has quite reasonable rates compared to some well-known tourist-centric restaurants at Blue Hills and Five Cays.

Both al fresco and indoor seating are available at Chinson’s Grill Shack. The outdoor tables overlook Leeward Highway, and it’s more interesting than may initially be expected to watch the varied traffic driving by. The restaurant is popular with both locals and visitors alike, and if you’ve been to the Turks and Caicos before, there’s a good chance you’ll see a familiar face!

The restaurant actually bakes its own bread, which definitely makes a difference in the quality of the food. The bakery at Chinson’s serves other establishments and walk-in customers, so it’s not necessary to dine in to enjoy their fresh bread and patties.

The Menu

Chinson’s does quite a few dishes very well. A general lunch favorite is their excellent BBQ chicken or pulled pork sandwich, which is complete with seasoned fries. Another excellent choice is their jerk and BBQ ‘just da meat’ meals, which may be chicken or pork ribs without the distraction of sides other than a bit of ‘festival’ or bread. Like all good BBQ joints, the jerk and BBQ at Chinson’s is slow-cooked for hours, so when it’s gone, it’s off the menu for the day!

Most dishes have side options, which may include peas n’ rice, white rice, French fries, coleslaw, mac n’ cheese, country cornbread, salad, plantains, or festival (a fried and slightly sweet dumpling).

The fish and chips are also popular, and are a contender for best on the island. Island favorites of steamed fish, stewed oxtail, curry goat, and conch fritters are also options.

The Chinese side of the menu includes spring rolls, fried wontons, egg rolls, crab Rangoon, soups, wings, and a collection of chow Mein, stir-fry, fried rice, and noodle dishes.

Chinson’s offers a popular collection of cocktails, and maintains a decent selection of local and imported beers, and wines. The central bar at the restaurant is a popular local hangout spot as well.

On the dessert side is ‘bulla’ a type of cookie, which can be served with cheese or ice cream.

Reservations are not typically required at Chinson’s Grill Shack.
