Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands — Authorities were called to the scene of a plane crash Tuesday afternoon near the Providenciales International Airport (PLS), where the wreckage of a Cessna 210 arriving from the United States was identified.
The small aircraft crashed approximately 1,900 feet (600 m) west of the airport’s runway in the vegetation bordering the Chalk Sound lagoon. Records from FlightAware show that the plane appears to have departed Hollywood, Florida at 11:37 AM EDT, and was last seen near Mayaguana, Bahamas before crashing in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
No details have been released yet regarding the identity and number of occupants or possible injuries. The plane's tail number, visible in images taken of the crash, appears to be registered to MOB Aviation USA LLC.
In the wake of the crash, the Providenciales International Airport—also known as the Howard Hamilton International Airport—was temporarily closed. It has since reopened, wrote the Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority (TCIAA) in a press release Tuesday afternoon.
The TCIAA added that they are actively managing the situation in coordination with local authorities, and that formal updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
